I could be in NYC today for the Grand Opening of C. Wonder!

I've been reading about it for months! It's the latest retail offering from venture capitalist Chris Burch (as in Tory Burch's ex-husband) and has a little bit of everything...fashion, home and gifts.

For those of us who can't get to New York tomorrow, I'm counting on their website! Even the bathroom is amazing!

A Day in the Life...

I know these days are passing quickly and at some point I will miss being so depended on and needed. It is truly a gift and it makes 2am feedings much more tolerable if I have this perspective!

No need for an alarm clock! These guys usually wake us up around 6am:

Followed by their "Sissy" around 6:45...eager to see her brothers and have her favorite breakfast. We call it "Toad in the Hole," here's the recipe, couldn't be easier:

This is fun family time...very brief as Dad leaves for work early and Janie's ride for school comes around 8:20. She loves her 4 yr. old preschool program and has the best teachers! Here she is on the first day:

Then I get to hang with Charlie and Hunter. We basically drink milk, play on the activity mat, kick and coo, and then go to sleep, wake up, repeat :)

When it's pretty we love to go on walks and spend time outside. They love the fresh air! Summer is a constant companion, as well:

Then Janie comes home and fills the house with stories of school, songs and lots of energy. Her new swingset has been a hit:

Daddy is always a welcomed site and we love having friends and visitors stop by! Supper and bath time can be hectic but it's such a nice way to signal the end of the day.

Speaking of supper...it is usually a quick heat up of something from the freezer but I'm eager to try some new recipes, like this one:

I'm Emerging...Slowly

It has been a wild ride, these past few months! The boys arrived July 30th and I find I'm just now emerging from a little cocoon that has been feeding, changing, burping and getting back to sleep these little fellas, Charlie and Hunter:

Oh my gosh, they're so sweet! And their sister is truly amazing, taking it all in stride as her new little brothers change her life considerably:

By the way, my sister took this picture of Janie. She just started a photography business and she's amazing! Check out her site here.
Obviously blogging and being creative has fallen by the wayside but I can't complain. At the end of each day, I am truly amazed at how fulfilling it is to be a mommy and I am humbled and grateful!

The boys are growing and changing dramatically and it is a gift to be able to nurture and watch them each day. Exhausting, yes, but I am not alone...my "team" has been like a web of support and comfort. I have not made it this far without them! My precious husband, my mom who has been here for weeks at a time and helps me keep my sanity! My mother and father-in-law, amazingly helpful, willing and able to do ANYTHING-even the late night shift feedings, God bless them! And our friends who have provided suppers, driven Janie all around town, offered wonderful support and love and advice. I feel so incredibly blessed!!

I'm also excited about using my mind in other ways and this blog allows me to do just that! I'm going to re-launch a new and refreshed look in the coming months with some fun home projects, design inspiration and of course, twin progress! It all keeps me busy but that's what I love most about being a mommy...the way it inspires me to be my best self.

New Inspiration

So as we continue to wait for the boys to arrive (anyday now), I am anticipating a lull in blog posts until things fall into some sort of routine...wonder when that will be?

I will, however, need some design distraction and inspiration from time to time, I feel sure. So I updated my blog roll (at right)and was excited to find a few NC bloggers and this one by artist Caitlin McGauley, how cute is this crib bedding and the water colors she painted?

My daily inspiration will certainly be in the form of two little baby boys who I can't wait to meet and their big sister. I feel so blessed and thankful for this precious miracle and I pray everyday that I'm up for the task. A quick reminder of the early days...

A "Sweet" Birthday Party

Janie's fourth birthday party was a few weeks ago and it was wonderful, in every way! We gathered a few of her friends at the new Cupcakery in downtown Southern Pines and decorated cupcakes, played games, had their faces painted and enjoyed a yummy cupcake birthday cake.

Janell, the owner of C Cups, and her crew did a wonderful job of creating a festive atmosphere and making it VERY easy for Mom and Dad!

Kim Kirkpatrick, a local face painter who is often at the Southern Pines farmers market on Saturday mornings, made the party even more fun for the girls!

The "icing on the cupcake" were these precious apron party favors, made by my dear mother-in-law.

Most importantly, the birthday girl was all smiles and felt very special which is exactly what we wanted for her before her world changes with TWO baby brothers. I highly recommend C Cups for a sweet treat or a magical and easy birthday party destination!

Nursery Decor with a Purpose

My sweet friend Brit gave me these precious alphabet cards for a shower gift and I can't wait to hang them in the boys' nursery.

They're from this really cool on-line shop, Children Inspire Design, that was set up by owner and "social entrepreneur" Rebecca Peragine in an effort to teach children about honoring and protecting our earth and all who inhabit it.

I'm going to order this mobile, too, and I love the wall map and bird prints. Great gift ideas and even better when you know you're supporting a great cause. Thank you, Brit!!

Summer Fun

A serious lack of posts, I know, but things are moving along and anyday these baby boys will join us so I'm trying to get settled and also rest as much as possible. It helps to have some "summer fun" ideas for Janie during these long hot days.

Martha is nice to provide endless ideas and inspiration on her website. And here are a few more ideas:

-Fill up a sand and water table or water table (like this one) in the shade with fresh, cool water and special water-proof friends and buckets.

-Create an art area or room with a child's size table and chairs, oil cloth mat and tons of supplies from Michaels or other craft stores. Janie and I could paint for hours! I also put her CD player in there so she can sing along. Oil cloth, by the yard, from Cath Kidston:

-My mom's GREAT idea was to give Janie a disposable camera and let her take pictures around the yard, in town, wherever she chooses, and then develop them and make a book about our summer.

-Janie and her dad love to make homemade popsicles and Oprah featured some very creative recipes last month.

I might be running out of creative ideas so PLEASE share some summer fun of your own, I'd love to hear!

Life in the Fast Lane!

We're finally moved and somewhat settled into our new home! Thankfully we're here but it always takes a while to adjust to a new setting. I'm so incredibly thankful for the support of friends and family. We could not have made it without their help!! I look forward to sharing updates and pictures as things progress, with our family and our new home.

I had to share Janie's precious invites to her fourth birthday party. A VERY small get together at the new cupcake place downtown. I ordered them from Amy of Rock Paper Dove on Etsty. So cute and very appropriate for this "lively" time in our lives. Be back soon, just as soon as I can!

I always tell people that I want to be a dentist AND an Interior Designer when I grow up, like my mom and dad. I think I'll be good at both. So last week I decided to brush up on my decorating skills and while browsing Karen's Attic, a local consignment store, I noticed this cute little table and chairs for only $10! Perfect for Kit! But the faded blue had to go! I have seen way too much blue lately with my baby brothers on the way.

I had to get to work. First, I picked out the paint color, Benjamin Moore's White Dove, OC-17, of course, and after sanding and brushing, I began the painting process.

Painting is hard work but it definitely paid off! Now we have a perfect place for Kit to enjoy a tea party!

The Fruits of Our Labor

We've been strawberry picking and jam making at our house...so fun to look back at last year's endeavor.

The lei is from Disney's Polynesian resort. Perfect for a day of strawberry picking! Pressley Farms in Carthage is definitely our favorite place to pick!

We followed these instructions again, from the Queen of the Kitchen, the Pioneer Woman. I must admit that usually my results look nothing like the photos in books and blogs but our jam turns out pretty well and that's because she really walks you through the process, step by step.

Finally, the fruits of our labor! All ready for Christmas presents (I'm not usually this ambitious but I have a feeling that life post twins is going to be CRAZY!)

Dutch Doors!

I am so excited that our new home has TWO! Especially when the weather is so nice, like today.

Dutch Door - Originating in the Netherlands during the early 1600s, this unique design features top and bottom halves that operate independently. The bottom can be closed for some privacy, while the top is left open for fresh air and neighborly chats. Or, when locked together, the two sections can work as a standard door. Dutch doors were first used on front entryways and were later placed at secondary doorways to the kitchen or scullery. These doors also provided ventilation to barns and stables. Dutch doors lend a country charm to rear entrances and outbuildings such as potting sheds.

I can imagine that Summer will greatly appreciate it, too. Now off to packing!!

Big Brown

Happy Mothers Day!! I have the most amazing example of a mother to follow and I am grateful for her daily! Our day was very special and I got to wake up to these beautiful lilies from my sweet husband.

So, here is a "before" picture of Big Brown. He came with my husband. Although he's actually very comfortable (we can sit together in the chair when I'm not pregnant) his arms and nailhead trim are ridiculously overscaled.

Instead of getting rid of Big Brown, who my husband has genuine affection for, I decided to have my upholsterer make a slip cover out of this fabric from Lewis & Sheron Textiles. Pre-washed and treated, I can slip it off and wash it anytime and it really brightens up the room.

Things are looking a little sparse around here as we're starting to pack for the big move! I think he will look much better in his new home! Now he just needs a new name.

Healthy Lunching

Mmmm...these smoothie recipes inspire me to re-think my typical lunch and replace it with something simple and healthy that I can easily make at home:

Fruite Smoothie:
Mix with plain yogurt or almond milk:

Ingredients
2 navel oranges, peel and pith removed, cut into chunks
1 cup frozen raspberries
1 cup frozen blueberries
Directions
1.Puree ingredients in a blender until smooth. Serve immediately

Today, Janie and I copied our favorite wrap recipe from Rolly Poly, the "Health Nut," and it was yummy and filling:

1 whole grain wrap (I like Mission's multi-grain small wraps)
Low fat cream cheese
Sunflower seeds and cashews
Alfalfa sprouts
Ripe avacado

Layer ingredients on wrap and enjoy! It's so good served with broccoli salad!

And lastly, I'm very excited to try these eBoost vitamin and energy packets. They seem perfect for the inevitable afternoon sinker!

A Few of my Favorite (Spring) Things

Last weekend I hosted a mother/daughter tea party (with help from my lovely and gracious mother) and it was such fun! It was a good reminder of how nice the English tradition of afternoon tea really is. Now that spring is here and it's getting warmer, here's a yummy herbal ice tea that's very easy to make:

-8-10 tea bags (4 cups to 1 quart and most pitchers hold 4-6 quarts, but I like mine strong). I love Ahmad Teas and their Rosehip, Hibiscus & Cherry is very good; they also have fruity black teas if you need a kick.
-1/4 cup of agave nectar
-fresh mint of limes

Bring two cups of water to a boil, add agave until dissolved, let tea bags steep for about 10 minutes (too long and it might become bitter) and add to pitcher + water, serve over ice with lime wedge or mint sprig. Wouldn't this be yummy with hot cross buns?

Here's a recipe from the Pioneer Woman, one of my heroes! Or you can go the easy route, like me, and order them from your local bakery.

On a totally different note, I love these Beach Tints for lips and cheeks from Becca. They smell so good and give a subtle flush.

And my favorite faux glow is the Tan Towel. So natural and easy to apply! They're sold locally at Denkers. I got this Bobbi Brown sunscreen spray for our honeymoon six years ago and I'm still a huge fan!

And lastly, even though I can only dream about wearing something non-maternity, I can still look, right? How cute is this little dress from Anthropologie!

Nursery on the mind...

I first heard about Lewis & Sharon Textiles from Jenny of Little Green Notebook and they have been a great on-line fabric source. I love this simple white crib bedding from Restoration Hardware with some fun pattern on the glider and windows, but which colorway??

So cute! And fresh (as my mom would say). And these might be cute in Janie's playroom:

You can't beat the price, they arrive very quickly (with free trim options) and you can also request to have them treated to (help) prevent stains.

The next chapter...

It's official! We're moving in June to a new house, one month (or so) before our twin boys are due to arrive. So life is a bit crazy right now but I'm looking forward to chronicling the next chapter.

Our new home is a ranch, built in 1963. Definitely a different feel from our English cottage-style home which was built in 1929, but I'm excited about the unique challenges (and conveniences) this house will provide.

Initially we plan to redesign the kitchen-I'm always drawn to light, bright kitchens like these, designed by the AMAZING design trio, Massucco Warner Miller.

I plan to take this blog in a fun new direction as I chronicle tackling the big and little home projects, all while keeping up with two baby boys and their very excited sister. So stay tuned and bear with me!

Fabric Crush

Club Chairs

When I mention "club chairs" to a client or friend, I'm refering to a fully upholstered, comfortable chair, many times used in pairs. But here is a more detailed description of their origin from Google Answers:

The word "club" in club chair harks back to the gentlemen's clubs in
nineteenth century England where a gentleman could go to get away from
his household (including womenfolk). Once there, he would sink into a
well-upholstered leather chair and relax with a drink and perhaps a
cigar. The names of the fashionable London streets full of such clubs
are still used to name classic club chairs: St. James, Piccadilly and
so on.

I love a pair of club chairs in a living room for the comfort they provide and also because I feel a little more freedom in fabric, pattern and detail choices. It's not as huge a committment as a sofa or a set of dining chairs.

I found this great pair of Baker club chairs + matching ottoman at a consignment shop here and I am contemplating how to recover them. Should I go with a neutral linen with a pretty, bright trim? Or a fun color or pattern? I'm thinking a pretty turquoise or aqua linen would modernize their classic shape...what do you think?

A Cleaner Kitchen

The kitchen truly is the heart of our home. We spend so much time in there (and I'm in love with the clean, white kitchen above) so it's important to make sure it's organized and sanitized effeciently. This article was in the Raleigh News & Observer this week, great tips!

Sunday was the first day of spring. To get the cleaning season started right, we looked for the best advice on cleaning the busiest - and maybe dirtiest - room in the house: the kitchen. For a list of what we should clean, how and when, we asked a bunch of germ experts. The biggest surprise? People with pets are six times more likely to get salmonella-based infections. The culprit is pet bowls, particularly the water bowl. We often dump it in the sink before we start handling food. (Summer's dish is currently being sterilized)
1. Microwave
Fill a bowl with 2 cups water and a whole lemon, cut into slices. Place it inside and microwave for 2 minutes, then wipe the oven out with paper towels. Hot water softens food spills and the lemon cuts grease and keeps the microwave smelling fresh.
2.Stove and oven
Spray stove spills with an all-purpose cleaner and let stand 10 minutes for easier cleaning. Oven spills aren't a food hazard if you regularly heat the oven to 400. Cover a fresh spill with salt until you have time to clean it.
3. Counters
Clean regularly with an all-purpose cleaner. Spray with a weak bleach solution and air-dry if needed.
4. Dishes and dishwashers
If you hand-wash dishes, air-dry in a rack. Dirty or wet dish towels can recontaminate clean dishes. To reduce soap buildup in a dishwasher, occasionally fill the soap dispenser with baking soda or place a small cup of vinegar on the top shelf, then run the dishwater empty.
5. Sink, drain and faucet handle
Clean regularly with household cleanser, especially after washing or rinsing raw meat. Don't forget to clean the faucet handle.
6. Refrigerator
Every day, wipe down the handles, including the underside. Every week, throw out anything that's past its date or shows age. Every 3 to 6 months, empty shelves and clean the inside with 1/4 cup baking soda in 1 quart warm water, then spray with a bleach solution and air-dry. Remove drawers and clean under them. Before you return the food, wipe jars to remove drips. Clean the rubber gasket inside the door to ensure a tight seal. Vacuum the coils in the back and empty and clean the drip pan if necessary.
7. Pet bowls
Find a place besides the kitchen to clean turtle or frog habitats and empty pet bowls, or clean and sanitize the sink before you start washing fresh food.
8. Cutting boards
Most scientists think wooden cutting boards are safest, as long as they are kept clean, sanitized and dry. Studies have shown wood hampers bacteria growth, while bacteria thrive in scars on plastic. Either way, keep them clean by running them through the dishwasher, or sanitize by spritzing with a weak bleach solution (see Want to Sanitize? at right). Always change boards or clean with soapy water after preparing raw food - even vegetables. They grow in dirt, after all.
9. Sponges and dish towels
Change dish towels daily, or more often if they're wet or dirty. You can microwave a wet sponge for 2 minutes, but the time varies depending on the power of the microwave (and if the sponge is dry, it could catch fire). Instead, put sponges on the top rack of the dishwasher at the end of every day.
10. Cross-contamination
You know you're not supposed to put cooked food on the same surface you used for raw food. But it's not just cutting boards. You touch many things while you're handling raw food: salt and pepper shakers, cabinet handles, etc. Pay attention to what you touch so you can wipe it down. It's not necessary to rinse raw meat and chicken; that can spread bacteria.

Fresh Food Fast!

I needed some recipe inspiration so last week I spent an hour or so at Borders seaching for great cookbooks. My friend let me borrow the Barefoot Contessa's How Easy is That Cookbook and I really liked it.

She makes real cooking look so easy and I love the way she shares her favorite cooking basics in the book, like San Marzano canned tomatoes, available at Harris Teeter. I will never buy anything else!

I ended up with Martha Stewart's Everday Food: Fresh Flavor Fast. The book is divided into Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner/Desserts and it really does offer fresh, healthy and fast recipes, fast being KEY these days.

And I can't wait to make these creamy lemon squares. Nice that you can try a sampling of recipes on her website before committing to the book:

And a huge selection of beautiful coffee table books that are marked way down. My sister gave me Dwellings a few years ago and it's one of my favorites. You have to act fast with these sales...they allow you to hold an item for 15 minutes while you browse but things sell out quickly!

Fresh Bathroom Ideas

It can be fun to take a small space, like a powder room, and make it a little jewel box in your home. My mother painted hers a beautiful deep blue with an elegant light fixture and mirror and I've always loved that room.

You can be bold in such a small space. Try painting the cabinets an unexpected color or hang a small chandelier.

I also love a clean, white bathroom, with plenty of storage.

Have I mentioned that I love this holiday? And all of the pink and red it brings...I received the most beautiful lilies in the mail last week and they are in full bloom.

Janie and I made these peanut butter and jam Valentine cookies to take to some friends and they were really good!

And the latest issue of House Beautiful just arrived, celebrating the color pink for spring. Whether boldly, as in this little girl's room below by designer Melissa Rufty (I love the Amanda Talley painting):

Organizing Month by Month

This is a great time of year to tackle home projects and it can seem less daunting if you commit to organizing and updating one room or area a month. Take the foyer, for example, is it time to replace the dead plant in the corner or add some fun pillows or maybe a tray for mail and keys?

It doesn't have to overwhelm you...if your goal is to refresh your bedroom or home office, begin with organizing a drawer a day. With that bit of accomplishment, you'll be inspired to update further.

Once you've cleaned out and de-cluttered, I promise, you'll be motivated to keep it that way!

Who knows, you may even be inspired to paint a room or replace the kitchen backsplash.

At the very least, how about trying to make the beds daily and keep some fresh flowers or plants around the house. It really lifts the spirits! Need more inspiration? Check out organizing pro Peter Walsh's new show on the OWN channel, Monday nights. Or his new book, Lighten Up.

Is just around the corner! It's one of my favorite holidays because you can celebrate the people you love and decorate with bright red hearts and candy. I love to hang a big red heart on our door and over Janie's table.

Cozy Living Rooms

What makes a living room cozy and inviting? Lately I've had several clients and friends ask me that question.

More than anything else I think it's a feeling you create in the room by adding special, thoughtful touches. Like the art on the easel in the photo above (notice there's nothing hanging on the walls) and the rough texture of the rug. Or the clever use of lighting in the photo below. The designer hung a small chandelier very low and used wall shelves as a side table because of the limited space.

A mix of textures, great sophisticated lighting and plenty of seating are key elements of a great living room but adding fun pillows and natural elements adds personality.

A great way to tell if your living room is inviting to guests is to act like one...is the sofa warm and inviting with a throw and some pillows, is the seating arrangement condusive to conversation, is there plenty of light for reading and enough surface area to set a drink down or play a game? Ask yourself these questions and then make the changes! You'll be so glad you did when unexpected guests arrive!

Christmas Goodies

Merry (almost) Christmas! Sorry for the lack of posts. It's such a busy time of year and we've been enjoying every bit of it. This year we gave Orange-Almond Shortbread cookies and Russian Tea to friends and neighbors. The tea has been wonderful (for us too) on these freezing cold days. Below is the recipe I used, very easy.

Russian Tea:
Ingredients
2 cups orange-flavored drink mix (e.g. Tang)
2 cups white sugar
1/4 cup instant tea powder
3/4 cup lemon-flavored instant tea powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
Directions
1.In a large bowl, combine orange drink mix, sugar, tea powder, cinnamon and cloves. Mix well and store in an airtight container.
2.To serve, put 3 teaspoons of mix in a mug. Stir in 1 cup boiling water. Adjust to taste.

The other day, Janie wanted to "make a Santa," so I found pieces of felt at Wal-Mart and cut one out. She helped stuff and I just used fabric glue. It was a fun, cold-weather-day project.

And Janie was a shepherd in her school play. The school did a great job getting all of the children involved and celebrating the true meaning of the season.

Isn't it fun to share the sugar plums that dance in our heads this time of year? These are just a few things, big and small, that bring me joy and might please someone in your life (or you!) Like Sake Perfume from Fresh...it's subtle and not too floral...very nice.

One of my dear friends just surprised me with this beautiful porcelain diffuser from Jardin de Rochelle, now sitting on my desk and filling the room with its sweet scent. A perfect gift! You can find them locally at One Eleven Main.

Fun and colorful pillows, like these from this great Etsy site. They can instantly change the look of a room and it's fun to change them out with the seasons.

Joy Tea from Starbucks is a seasonal blend...I'm addicted to their Joy Tea Lattes.

This would obviously qualify as a "small thing" but I love Method's dish soap pump in clementine...I love all of their prodcuts, actually. Their anti-bac counter spray is another favorite!

OK, I haven't actually tried this product yet, but The Wonder Bar face soap claims make me very curious. And if Erika and her staff love it...it must be worth trying, right? Thank you for e-mailing me your holiday entertaining tips. Elizabeth said she plans an annual Christmas Tea Party for her little girls and their moms, so cute.

Exterior Makeover

I recently helped a young family with their home exterior and the results are subtle but effective and most importantly, they're very happy with the "face lift." They had to replace their siding with Hardiplank so we chose a nice, creamy white Benjamin Moore color for the siding and a putty color for the front door to complement.

We replaced their light fixtures with these beautiful reproduction lantern-style fixtures in copper from McLean Lighting Works in Greensboro. We also added copper planters to warm up the stonework. It's a beautiful old home and now it really shines.

Impromptu Cocktails

It's nice to have everything ready for a last minute get together during the holidays. If you keep fresh flowers in your home, festive cocktail napkins and the makings of a few easy drinks and appetizers, you'll be set for an impromptu gathering with no stress involved. A small table can easily serve as a make-shift bar, like the photo above. Here's a great, concise list of well-stocked bar essentials.

Holiday Cosmopolitan
1 part Vodka
1 part Triple Sec
1 part cranberry juice
Shake with ice

An easy appetizer to have on hand is hot red pepper jelly served over cream cheese with crackers and it's good to keep a mix of nuts by the bar.

And it's absolutely lovely to have a little festive treat or gift for your guests as they depart. A home-made Christmas CD or a little box of chocolates will definitely be enjoyed and appreciated. Have you decked your halls yet? It's such a fun time of year so why not get started? I found this beautiful, wire-edged ribbon at Gulley's Christmas Cottage a few weeks ago and it made the perfect bow. Here's a quick bow-tying lesson if you're like me and need some help. Make sure you start with a thick, wire-edged ribbon and if it's going to be exposed to rain, etc...make sure it's an outdoor ribbon, otherwise it could bleed.

Skirted Console Tables

The idea of a skirted console table first appealed to me when Domino published this photo below. I literally tore it out, found some fabric and had a skirt for our dining room hunter's bench made within the week. We fitted a piece of glass on top and added some trim and it really saved the piece and provided some hidden storage. Now I need a smaller version for a guest bedroom and I love the inspiration that these photos provide.

Front Porch Make-Over

Our front porch needed a little help (as you can see). So with my two helpers, Ed and Janie, we got it ready for the holidays. I know it's early but I love this time of year and a pretty front porch always makes guests feel welcome. I decided to make a magnolia wreath and followed this tutorial from Southern Living. I purchased a 15" wreath oasis from a local florist and soaked it in water. My helpers gathered tons of magnolia leaves and we poked them into the wreath in concentric circles. I'll add a big red bow closer to Christmas to make it more festive.

I also spray painted the planters with Rust-Oleum in black and planted some dwarf evergreens and pansies.

And look who made his grand entrance on Monday morning? Jo Jo! Again, I know it's early but what could be more fun than celebrating the holidays with a three year old? We couldn't wait to start!

Holiday Flowers

I love to pot paper white bulbs and amaryllis this time of year so they'll be ready for Christmas. I purchase my bulbs from Gulley's, the local garden center. Good bulbs from a nursery are almost always healthier and last longer than the inexpensive bulb kits from Lowe's & Home Depot. I put the bulbs in a glass vase, like this one from Crate & Barrel, and surround them with a bag of river rocks. Just enough water to touch the bottom of the bulbs and a warm, sunny spot and they are off! They make great centerpieces for the holidays and lovely hostess gifts, too. I'll be back on Wednesday with a front porch make-over.

I'm a little obsessed with Jessica Seinfield's new cookbook, Double Delicious, Good Simple Food for Busy, Complicated Lives. Not that my life is that terribly complicated right now, but it is really nice to have some help coming up with dinner ideas. We tried the Sweet Cherry Tomato Pasta recipe over the weekend and everyone loved it. Her website and blog are packed with ideas and ways to help motivate even the laziest cook, like this Well Stocked Kitchen Guide. AND there's a Community section where people can share tips and ask questions. Love this suggestion:

“Check an egg's freshness by placing it in a bowl of water. If the egg lies flat on its side, it's fresh; if it floats, throw it out!”

Thanksgiving Decor

I think that Thanksgiving Decor should be easy and natural and not overlooked just because Christmas is right around the corner. A simple wreath, like the one above from Williams Sonoma, made of bay leaves, looks great hanging on the front door. Then you can add a bright red bow in December. I just ordered a square boxwood wreath, like the one below, from Mistletoe Meadows, a tree farm in western North Carolina. If you're local, they set up a lot each year in Olmstead Village.

I also love to keep the pumpkins and gourds out as a centerpiece through November. Martha spray painted these miniature pumpkins gold which is pretty, especially with blue!

And I love to get Janie excited and involved. These place mats from Pottery Barn Kids are adorable and the felt leaf garland would be cute hung around the kitchen. I might try to make my own garland from this picture :) we'll see! Happy Decorating and may we all have thankful hearts this season.

Painting Workshop

I am so excited to be attending a Painting workshop by two incredible North Carolina artists, Bee Sieburg and Molly Courcelle. My mother treated me to this two-day workshop in the beautiful setting of Lake Logan, outside of Asheville. Bee and Molly are a very talented mother/daughter duo and I am thrilled for this opportunity. Thank you to my sweet Mom, not only for a chance to learn from such incredible talent but to spend this very special time together.

Before & After Chest of Drawers

I was inspired by the Canadian House & Home article that I featured on this post to update my husband's tired chest of drawers. It took a while to decide on the paint color and hardware but I'm pleased with the result.

I lightly sanded it and used Benjamin Moore's Regal Select Premium Interior Paint that is self-priming in Abington Putty. My wonderful painter, Bill, gave me a demonstration on how to paint furniture and suggested using a Purdy paint brush, which made a big difference. It took about three coats and then I sealed it with two coats of Wipe on Poly, a great product recommended by Ginny from Little Green Notebook.

Pumpkin Bread

Janie and I made this pumpkin bread yesterday and it is really good. So good that the whole loaf is almost gone, if that tells you anything. And it's relatively easy so enjoy!!

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups (210g) flour
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 cup (200 g) sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup (1/4 L) pumpkin purée* (I used canned pumpkin)
1/2 cup (1 dL) olive oil
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup water
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/2 cup (1 dL) chopped walnuts

* To make pumpkin purée, cut a pumpkin in half, scoop out the seeds and stringy stuff, lie face down on a foil or Silpat lined baking sheet. Bake at 350°F until soft, about 45 min to an hour. Cool, scoop out the flesh. Freeze whatever you don't use for future use. Or, if you are working with pumpkin pieces, roast or boil them until tender, then remove and discard the skin.

Method
1 Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Sift together the flour, salt, sugar, and baking soda.

2 Mix the pumpkin, oil, eggs, 1/4 cup of water, and spices together, then combine with the dry ingredients, but do not mix too thoroughly. Stir in the nuts.

3 Pour into a well-buttered 9x5x3 inch loaf pan. Bake 50-60 minutes until a thin skewer poked in the very center of the loaf comes out clean. Turn out of the pan and let cool on a rack.

Makes one loaf. Can easily double the recipe.

Maybe this is just news to me but I was excited to learn that most big box stores like West Elm, Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn, will ship at no charge if you find something on line that you like and then call a store and order it directly from them. I was about to order these knobs on-line and the shipping was $14! But I called the Raleigh store and they shipped them same day at no charge.

Last year I found some outdoor pillows from West Elm that I loved and the website said they were no longer available. I called their Charlotte store and they had them in-stock, half price and they shipped them for free that day! Speaking of West Elm, they have some neat new collaborations right now with Benjamin Moore, Lutz & Patmos (above), Sesame Letterpress (above) and more!

A couple of my favorite discoveries were Charlie West Pottery & Lamps Charlie West is a potter from Cleveland, GA and his lamps are one-of-a-kind works of art (if ordering a pair, they should be ordered together). They begin as a piece of clay and after being shaped and fired, they are beautifully and artfully glazed. They are true statement pieces and I can't wait to place them in a client's home.

Front Porch Planters

I love these sleek copper planters. I have seen similar ones around town and was excited to find these here. They come with custom inserts so you don't have to fill the entire planter up with soil. Wouldn't they look great with boxwood topiaries? These below are from Plow & Hearth and are actually made from a resin material. They have a self watering system so your plants will stay hydrated.

I get really excited about Halloween...I don't know if it's the candy corn or the fall weather or the beginning of holiday season or what, but it's so much fun to be a kid again. I was thrilled to see Martha Stewart's Halloween collection for Grandin Road.

Lots of fun, spooky stuff that will definitely bring trick-or-treaters ringing. And I am definitely going to wear that costume to Halloween parties. The Scent of Fall

Have you noticed a sweet, fragrant almost citrus-like scent lingering around this time of year? It's the delicate flowers of the Osmanthus shrub or Tea Olive Shrub, as it's more commonly known. I first noticed its scent in Charlotte in early October but never identified it until I moved here and found one blooming in our back yard. I took a piece of it to my neighbor and garden center owner, Pete Gulley. Tea Olive shrubs grow nicely around here and require very little maintenance. You can keep them in a container (right by an entry would be ideal as a sweet greeting) but you have to water diligently. Right now is a great time to plant Osmanthus because it can establish a root system during the fall and winter months.

I lived in Charlotte during design school and for several years afterwards and one of my favorite places to visit for inspiration was Circa Interiors & Antiques. I've been following their blog and keep going back to a previous post on this condo, designed for the Symphony Guild Desinger Showhouse. Created by two of Circa's designers, Catherine Walters and Patrick Lewis, this condo feels young and modern. I'm sure it's a small space but I like how they used over scaled accessories.

Spooky Decor

We spent time decorating our home for Halloween this weekend. It's one of my favorite times of the year...visiting the pumpkin patch, hanging up spooky spiders and ghosts and watching my daughter squeal with delight. Easy centerpieces for this time of year are small pumpkins in a bowl or a pie pumpkin surrounded by small gourds. Of course Martha's got tons of ideas to inspire.

This is my favorite compote-style bowl from WS for a center piece.

And wouldn't this Halloween Gingerbread House from Williams Sonoma be a great activity...I'm not sure how long it would last in our house, though.

Flatweave Rugs

I really like the look of a more casual, flat weave or no pile rug. Even layered over sea grass or sisal, they can add a dimension of color and pattern. I've had several friends inquire about the different types of flat weave rugs and I found a great explanation on House & Home's website:

What is a flat weave rug?

Flat weave describes flat pile or no-pile rugs known for their durability and strength. They are made on a loom rather than knotted. They are considered less formal than oriental or Persian rugs. Their bold colours, geometric patterns and low cost make them perfect for casual living, cottages and brightening up floors for the summer. Standard sizes are 3' by 6', 4’ by 6’, 4’ by 9’ and 9’ by 12’.Different types include Aubusson, Dhurrie, Kilim and Soumak.

Aubusson rugs, like the one below, are typically more traditional with lighter colors and floral motifs.

Dhurries can be made from cotton, wool or jute and are usually inexpensive with a simple design.

Kilims are characterized by their rough wool, bright colors and geometric patterns and are reversible.

Soumaks tend to be higher quality wool rugs and therefore more expensive. They are made with an embroidery technique that loops around a cotton or wool foundation. Wouldn't this one make a gorgeous runner?

Sweetly Scented

How do you scent your home...with fresh flowers, candles, diffusers? Or do you prefer no scent? Whatever you choose (as long as it's not one of those plug in fragrances) can be fun and seasonal. Gianna Rose Atelier's version of ceramic diffusers, above, looks heavenly, especially for a beach house guest bathroom. This scent is orchid and honeysuckle. Blissliving Home's Kafir Lily Diffuser would make a great gift and it's nice and small so it could fit anywhere. The ceramic diffusers work by emitting fragrant essential oils from porous ceramic pieces so it's subtle and pretty. You can also find similar diffusers locally at One Eleven Main. I'm on a wait list for mine!

I love the little gourd shaped vase that these Palm Beach scented oil diffuser reeds come in (below) by Jonathan Adler. You can find them at the fabulous store Pieces in Atlanta.

Now that fall is here, I love to scent our kitchen with Mulling Spices from Williams Sonoma. Right now they're having a special, two for $18. These are great for spicing up cider or wine or just simmering in a little water on the stove. Your whole kitchen will smell like fall.

And my very favorite candle is Votivo's Red Currant, love their new packaging! You can find these locally at Denkers. It is a rich, warm scent that's great for the holidays and one of my favorite gifts for clients and friends. How do you make your home smell sweet?

Glazed Apple Spice Cake

I am excited to try this recipe this weekend now that apples are in season and at our local farmers market AND I have a beautiful new, blue friend (above) thanks to my sweet husband. Hope everyone has a fun-filled fall weekend!!

Serves 8

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup whole-wheat flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
Pinch of ground allspice
6 tablespoons softened unsalted butter
6 tablespoons light brown sugar
1/4 cup molasses
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/4 cup applesauce
2 apples
1/2 cup granulated sugar

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Butter and flour a 5-by-9-inch loaf pan.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, whole-wheat flour, baking powder, kosher salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice.
3. Use an electric mixer to beat together butter and light brown sugar until fluffy, about 4 minutes. Add molasses; beat until combined. Add eggs, 1 at a time, plus vanilla, and beat until incorporated.
4. With the mixer on low, add half the flour mixture and beat until just combined. Beat in applesauce; add remaining flour mixture until just incorporated.
5. Peel and core apples, reserving the peel and the core. Cut apple into 1/4-inch cubes, and fold into the batter. Transfer to pan, and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 1 hour, 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack; let cool completely.
6. In a small saucepan, combine granulated sugar, 1/2 cup water, and apple core and skin. Bring to a simmer and cook over medium-high heat until syrupy, about 10 minutes.
7. Remove cake from pan, and brush glaze over top and sides of cooled cake.

Painting a piece of furniture can be daunting! Choosing the right paint color and hardware and IF you're attempting the task yourself, figuring out how to do it, can take some time and consideration. I love the look of a painted chest of drawers. I think it can bring a tired, worn dresser to life. Foyer Warmth

What does your foyer say about you and your home? Does it welcome guests with warm, soft light a place to sit and maybe some personal touches? Does it come to life with a great wallpaper (like in the photo above, my favorite foyer ever, by Tom Scheerer) or a snappy paint color? Is there a mirror which provides more light and makes the room feel bigger and maybe a nice size tray to gather in and outgoing mail? In our home we mostly go in and out of the kitchen (thank goodness I finally changed out the counter tops) but in a more formal house, it's good to think about the finishing touches. It really does introduce your guests to the rest of the house.

Children's Gift Ideas

Birthday parties for children are so much fun but sometimes the challenge can be finding the right gift that's age-appropriate, affordable and unique. Here are some ideas I've come across lately.

I love the Paint-a-Pot Garden, pictured above, from Our Garden. It says for ages 5 and up but Janie and I had fun doing it today. It comes with a set of paints and brushes, a terra cotta pot, Marigold seeds and soil. A fun activity and children can watch their special garden grow! You can find them locally at my favorite garden center, Gulley's.

I also love making a short sleeve white T-shirt special (don't they go through hundreds of these?) by adding a child's name or monogram. I buy them from Target and take them to The Butterfly Cottage downtown for a quick, simple monogram. I've also ordered shirts from this Etsy site that are adorable and excellent quality!

We LOVE the book Bee and Me by Elle J. McGuinnes and Heather Brown. I think that book with a jar of local honey would make a great gift (for mom and dad, too) and teach children the importance of supporting local bee keepers. You can always find fresh, local honey at the Farmers Markets.

This is a little bit of a splurge for a very curious child...The Birdsong Identiflyer (below) is the coolest little handheld device that teaches children how to identify bird calls. Janie and I discovered this at Wildbirds Unlimited in Aberdeen and she could have played with it for hours. Do you have any children's gift ideas? I'd love to hear them!!

Ranch-Style Homes & Front Porch Planters

On a recent trip home to Asheville, I was inspired by my parents neighbors' home and front porch planters. Their ranch-style home has been totally converted into an updated mid-century classic with great details and amazing landscaping and planters. I had to sneak a few pictures!

Although typically I'm drawn to older homes with more details and charm, I really like the idea of an updated ranch and the simple layout and convenience they afford. Characterized by the following details, Ranch-style homes became popular after World War II as an economical alternative for all of the returning soldiers and their families:

•Single story
•Low pitched gable roof
•Deep-set eaves
•Horizontal, rambling layout: Long, narrow, and low to the ground
•Rectangular, L-shaped, or U-shaped design
•Large windows: double-hung, sliding, and picture
•Sliding glass doors leading out to patio
•Attached garage
•Simple floor plans
•Emphasis on openness (few interior walls) and efficient use of space
•Built from natural materials: Oak floors, wood or brick exterior
•Lack decorative detailing, aside from decorative shutters

My mom introduced me to the Fiddle Leaf Fig Trees (she has amazing taste and decorating abilities) and I love their height and shape, especially in the topiary form. And to have two, flanking the front door (which I didn't capture, unfortunately) is very effective! Love the symmetry!

Happy Anniversary!!

To my husband! It's been five years and it just gets better and better. It's so amazing to be married to my best friend and companion. I am thankful for him daily. This picture is from our honeymoon. We went to Curacao, a Caribbean island just south of Aruba and stayed at The Hotel Kura Hulanda (below) and it was perfect...the weather, food, service, views...so laid back and beautiful.

My second favorite trip we've ever taken was to Sonoma, California. At the suggestion of my dear friend, we stayed at The El Dorado, right on the square. I highly recommend this trip as a perfect romantic get away. It was delightful...I loved everything about the trip and can't wait to go back!

Honestly, though the trips are wonderful and memorable (and I love planning them), it's the everyday things that make being married to him so special. He truly brings out the best in me and loves and supports me like no one else. I hope and pray I do the same for him. Cheers to my steady Eddy!

Design Personality

Do you prefer bright colors and accents?

Or more subdued hues, like taupes, whites and grays?

Some designers will ask to look in your closet when you begin working together to get a sense of your color and pattern preferences but I can honestly say that personally, I like a mix. I think a home or apartment with a rainbow of colors or too many accents looks contrived and feels exhausting. But a totally muted palette lacks personality and seems sterile. What is your design personality? It helps to consider this before hiring a professional designer.

I was blown away by the home of Melissa Warner of design firm Massuco Warner Miller, featured in (and on the cover) of House Beautiful's May issue. I dogeared it and keep thinking about her apartment and after drinking in every photo of their website, I am blown away and totally inspired by this design trio's talent. These are just a few random pictures of my favorite rooms they have designed. I think their use of color (and wallpaper) are very effective in bringing the space to life and filling it with personality. Enjoy browsing if you have a moment!

Easy, Yummy Granola

This is the best and easiest homemade granola recipe I've tried. It is so yummy on ice-cream, with yogurt or milk or even by itself. The recipe and photo are from Tiny Urban Kitchen (a great site!)I added sliced almonds, golden raisins and ground flax seeds to mine.

Homemade Granola
Prep time: 5 minutes
Bake time: 20-25 minutes
Cool time: 10-15 minutes

Ingredients
2 cups oats
1/3 cup honey
1/3 cup vegetable oil
pinch of salt
1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
1-2 T brown sugar (optional - if you like it sweeter)

Preheat oven to 350 °F.

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix until all the oats are somewhat wet. The whole mixture should be a bit clumpy and wet. If you like clusters, you can add a tiny splash of water (like 1-2 tsp) to help some of the oats stick together.

Spread out the mixture on a pan and bake at 350 for about 20 minutes. Halfway through baking, you can stir the granola around. It will smell wonderful as the honey begins to slowly caramelize.

The longer you bake the granola, the darker in color it will become. If you like your granola relatively lightly golden brown, remove it after 20 minutes. It may still seem kind of wet, but don't worry! It will harden as it cools. Definitely take it out before the honey burns (i.e. when "golden brown" has turned into "black"). I learned this the hard way! After 30 minutes in the oven a portion of my oats had turned brown/black! [Although, to be perfectly honest, I really like slightly burnt food, and I actually loved the slightly burnt sugar flavor in these oats. I ended up eating most of the not-yet-completely-burned-bits of this batch . . YUM!]

Let the granola cool. Stir it around a bit - it will dry up nice and crunchy.

Of course, once you've made the basic granola, you can stir in other add-ins like dried fruit, coconut slivers, chocolate chips, etc. I happen to be super picky when it comes to granola, and I actually like mine plain. If you want to add nuts or seeds, you should mix them in with the oats and honey before baking.

Fall always inspires me to get my ducks in a row and organize! As much as I love Summer, I actually enjoy getting back into a routine when September rolls around. And these photos make me want to jump right into my projects!

And oh to have shelves by the stairs in the basement! I might have to get right on that.

More Design In A Day...

Autumn Hues are continuing to inspire me (despite the 105 degree weather we're having) and although I have been very neutral-minded in terms of rugs, I love the idea of a warm, patterned rug to spice things up. This rug from West Elm has a great pattern and would make a perfect runner.

Vacuum your wool rugs at least once a week. Get a professional cleaning done every one to two years. Blot spills as quickly as possible with a white cloth; then spot treat.

Easy Ways to Update

Happy September!

With the hint of fall in the air and the holidays just around the corner, I'm devoting a few posts to some easy ways to update your home. I posted about some "Design in a Day" ideas here a while back and here are some more fresh ideas:

*PAINT! Such an easy and inexpensive way to update...even just the foyer, as in this photo above. Painting a space in a warm, rich hue welcomes guests and enlivens a room. It's also fun to paint a powder room in a rich color, ceiling too, to make it feel like a jewel box. But color can be daunting, so ask a designer or friend for help if you're unsure.

*ACCESSORIES! We all know by now that changing out lamps (or at least lamp shades) and pillows on a sofa or chair can update instantly but try changing out some other accessories, too.

Try a warm-colored cashmere throw like these from WS Home, on sale right now, love the color Autumn Glaze. Or a stack of lacquered boxes, like these from Lille, great for storing things like stamps, stationary and photos. A new collection of picture frames and coffee table books are an easy update and flea markets and antique stores are a great place to look for silver frames and accessories.

At Home Spa

I love a good pedicure and manicure. It makes me feel so pampered. But it's not always easy to find the time. So last week, I went to The Walmarts (as my daughter calls it) and stocked up on at-home spa essentials. This kit from Burts Bees is my favorite. Their peppermint foot lotion, cuticle cream and pumice stone is all you need. Oh, and this handy four-way buffer. It makes your nails smooth...then my favorite Essie color for toes, Haute as Hello and nails, Pillow Talk.

And I've never tried this but I'm thinking about it...a brown sugar scrub, made at home, here's a recipe,

Mix in a plastic bowl:
½ cup of raw turbinado sugar (or brown sugar)
¼ cup of honey
Add 3-4 drops of essential oil if you have some around.

Or I might just stick to my favorite, Clinique's Sparkle Skin body scrub, can't go wrong.

Whole Living

My new favorite lifestyle magazine and website is Whole Living, a Martha Stewart Publication. I just ordered the magazine and can't wait for the first one to arrive. There's a section entitled 10 things you should do this month. One month it featured "Thoughts on Living in the Now." I love this piece of advice; "Take comfort in the uneventful. It prepares you for what's to come."

It also offers great recipes and ideas (how to stock a healthy pantry) and easy yoga moves. One of my favorite sections is Natural Remedies, like this natural cough control tea, above. The website is great but the magazine is incredible. I read it cover to cover while getting my hair cut last week and it's only $10 right now, with a free gift.

The Possibilities....

Are endless...how would you cover this chair, the Cantrell Chair by Suzanne Kasler for Hickory Chair? Or would you? I love a textured linen with nailhead trim for a classic look. But sometimes it's fun to have a "statement" chair. To give a fairly traditional form some personality. Did you know that wing chairs were created to block cold drafts in homes before we had indoor heat? That explains why more modern wing chairs have only slight "wings," only there for the affect.

Wouldn't it be fun to cover it in this fabric by Quadrille, shown below in reverse on dining chairs in this month's House Beautiful.
